Transferring a domain name between TransIP accounts

You can transfer domain names between TransIP accounts free of charge. There are two methods to choose from.

The first method is the so called 'Handover'. You do not require a authorization code using the Handover method, but both the sending and the receiving account will have to approve the transfer via their respective control panels.

The other method is an internal transfer using the domain name's authorization code. Although you don't need approval from either account, this method only works for domain names that use authorization codes.

In this article we will explain the difference between both methods for transferring domain names from one TransIP account to another.


Important to know

Both of the mentioned transfer methods will transfer the domain name and any linked services to another account at TransIP. It is important to take note of the following rules:
 

Payment obligation
Although these transfer methods are free of charge, the payment obligation of invoices created for the domain name and linked services are transfered to the receiving account this way. The ongoing contract for the domain name and linked services are transfered as well. Discounts on services can not be transferred between accounts.

Invoice history
The invoice history of the domain name and linked services are not transfered. However, a new invoice history will start after the transfer is completed.

Domain settings
The nameservers, DNS settings and WHOIS information of your domain name are transfered as well. The default domain settings of the receiving account are not used during the transfer.

Linked services
Forwarding Services, Email Only packages and web hosting packages linked to the domain name are transfered as well. Email addresses, databases and website files are included.

Website backups
The website backups of our web hosting packages are not transfered. However, after the transfer is complete, the web hosting package will automatically create new backups in the receiving account.

VPS
You can transfer VPS services with a Handover as well. Read the article 'Transfering a VPS to another TransIP account' for more information.


Transferring a domain name between accounts using a Handover

Step 1

To initiate a Handover for a domain name, the owner of the account the domain name is located in will first have to log on this control panel.

Next, head over to the tab 'Domains & Hosting' and select the domain name on the left hand side (don't check the box). Now click on the 'Manage' button on the right hand side and select 'Handover'.

Step 2

Enter the username of the receiving TransIP account and press 'Handover'. You will see a confirmation message if the Handover was succesfully requested.

If you receive an error message regarding the payment method, check whether both accounts have a valid payment method selected. Once they do, you can request the Handover.

If you see the error message below, the Handover can't be performed yet.

Due to safety measures, a Handover cannot be performed for 17 days after a domain has been registered or transfered.

If you still want to transfer the domain name to another TransIP account, we can manually transfer it for you. In that case both account owners will have to approve the transfer by sending us a message from both accounts. This message should be sent using the 'Contact' button in both control panels.

Make sure both messages contain the domain name, the usernames of both the sending and the receiving account an explicit confirmation of the transfer. We will then manually transfer the domain name to the desired account.



Step 3

Once the Handover is requested, the owner of the receiving account has to log on to his control panel. From there, click on the cog wheel in the top left corner, followed by 'My Account'.

Click on 'Transfers' to see an overview of your pending and completed Handovers. Now click on the Handover number of the domain name you wish to transfer.

Step 4

Click on 'Accept' on the right hand side to complete the Handover.

The domain name and any linked packages will now be transfered to the receiving account.


Transferring a domain name between accounts using an authorization code

It's also possible to transfer a domain name between TransIP accounts using the domain name's authorization code. As mentioned before, you will not need explicit approval from either account.

Not every domain name uses an authorization code, so this method is only applicable to domain extensions that use an authorization code to complete the transfer.

The sending account can check if the domain name supports authorization codes by logging on to his control panel. From there, go to the tab 'Domains & Hosting' and select the domain name on the left hand side (don't check the box).

Scroll down to see if 'Authorization code' is visible on this page. If that's the case, you can use this method to transfer the domain name between TransIP accounts.

If that's not the case, you will have to use a Handover to make the transfer happen.



Step 1

Log on to your control panel once you've received the authorization code from the current owner of the domain name.

Next, visit our homepage, enter the domain name in our domain checker and hit the magnifying glass button.

Step 2

The next page shows you can transfer the domain name. Although it might show a price here, our system will recognize the domain name is already registered with us, making it free of charge.

Now click on 'Transfer', followed by 'Continue'.

The next page tells you you're about to perform an internal transfer. Now enter the authorization code for the domain name and hit 'Continue'.

If you receive an error message regarding the payment method, check whether both accounts have a valid payment method selected. Once they do, you can request the Handover.

If you see the error message below, the internal transfer can't be performed yet.

As the final step you will need to confirm the transfer by clicking the 'Order' button. Your domain name and any linked packages will now be transfered to your account.
