How to Create an Install Image in OpenStack

You can use the Horizon interface to create your own install images, which you can then use to set up new instances. Follow the steps below. This guide is accompanied by a video tutorial at the bottom.

    Upload an ISO install image

    • Click on Compute -> Images
    • Click on Create Image
    • Enter an "Image Name" and "Image Description"
    • Select "File" as the source type, then choose the ISO file you want to use for the installation of your new instance
    • Select "ISO - Optical Disk Image" as the format
    • Click "Create Image"

    Create the system volume

    • In the side menu, click Volumes and then Volumes again
    • Click "Create Volume"
    • Enter a "Volume Name" and "Description"
    • Choose "Archive Storage" as the type
    • Specify the correct disk size for the installation — this will be the size of the image you are going to use
    • Click "Create Volume"
    • Then click "Edit Volume" for that volume
    • Select "Bootable" and click Submit

Set up an image install instance

    • In the side menu, click Compute -> Instances
    • Click "Launch Instance"
    • Enter an "Instance Name" and click "Next"
    • Under Source, set Boot Source to "Image", select the ISO image, and click "Next"
    • Under "Flavor", select a system that matches the specifications of your install CD — the hard drive size does not matter
    • Attach a network to the instance
    • The remaining steps are not important; click "Launch Instance"
    • Once the instance is online, open its side menu and select "Attach Volume"
    • Select the newly created "System Volume" and click "Attach Volume"

    Install the install image

    • From the instance’s side menu, select "Console"
    • Run the installation from the installation ISO
    • Customize the installation as needed
    • When finished, go to the instance’s side menu, click "Detach Volume" and remove the "System Volume" from the instance
    • Then completely power off the instance

Upload the volume to the image repository

    • In the side menu, click "Volumes" and then "Volumes" again
    • Select the "System Volume" on which the installation was performed
    • Ensure the status is set to "Available"
    • Click "Edit Volume" and then select "Upload to Image"
    • Enter an "Image Name" and click "Upload"
    • You will now see the status "Uploading" in the Volume overview
    • In the side menu, click "Compute" and then "Images"
    • It may take some time for the image status to change to "Active", as it must be replicated across multiple locations. Depending on the size of the image and the load on our network, this may take up to several hours.

    Delete the image install instance

    • In the side menu, click "Compute" and then "Instances"
    • Select the "Image Install Image" and click "Delete Instances"
    • In the side menu, click "Images"
    • Then delete the image install ISO
