By using TransIP's email services, you have the option to use a tag for your email addresses. This is especially useful for categorizing received emails into groups. However, it can also be used to intercept spam. In this article, we’ll explain how you can make use of these tags for your email addresses.
Note: You do not add tags when creating your email addresses. You only add these tags when, for example, signing up for a website’s services. When you are asked to enter your email address, that’s when you add a tag. How to do this is explained below.
You can add a tag to an email address by placing a '+' followed by the tag before the at symbol. You can choose the tag name yourself.
Manage your received emails using tags
When you make a purchase from an online shop, you’re almost always asked to provide your email address to receive updates about your order. If you prefer not to receive these emails in your Inbox, but instead in a central folder — for example, named ‘Shopping’ — you can use tags for that.
First, create a folder in your email program named, for example, ‘Shopping’. Then, when entering your email address on websites where you place orders, add a tag. If your email address is ‘info@mijnwebsite.nl’, you would instead enter something like ‘info+shopping@mijnwebsite.nl’.
You can then set up a filter in your email program so that emails sent to ‘info+shopping@mijnwebsite.nl’ are automatically moved to the ‘Shopping’ folder. This way, you keep your inbox organized!
Filter spam using tags
When you sign up for services on websites using your email address, you run the risk that your address may be shared with third parties. To find out which websites are responsible for this, you can also use tags.
Make sure that, when entering your email address on a website, you add a tag specific to that website.
When you later receive spam, the specific tag will immediately show you which website has passed your email address on to third parties.
