Configuring your email address on Android

In this guide, we walk you through step-by-step how to set up your TransIP email address on your Android device.

Don’t have an email address yet? With the Email Only packages and web hosting packages from TransIP, you can easily create email addresses.

In this article, we use screenshots and steps from a Samsung device running Android version 14. Keep in mind that not every Android device uses the same 'Email' application.

This means some images and steps in this article may look different or may not be available on your device. However, the steps are similar enough that you should still be able to add your email address.

If you’re unable to figure it out, please contact our support team. Be sure to send screenshots of the steps you're taking and mention your Android device model. This helps us assist you more effectively.

To use email with our web hosting packages and Email Only packages, it is important that your domain name uses the correct DNS settings.

If your domain uses the TransIP settings, this will happen automatically. If you manage the DNS settings yourself, make sure to use the MX, TXT, and CNAME records from your web hosting package.

Set up your email address on your Android device

There are several ways to set up your email on your Android device. First, open the 'Email' app on your smartphone.

    • If you haven't set up an email address on your device yet, you’ll be prompted to add an email account immediately.
    • Already created an email address in the 'Email' app? Then go to 'Settings' within the app and select 'Add Account'.
    • Another way is through the device’s 'Settings'. Look for 'Accounts', then 'Email' and 'Add Account'.

The 'Set up Email' screen will now appear, no matter which method you chose. Proceed to Step 1.

    Step 1

Now select the type of email account. Choose 'Other', as shown in the image below.

    Step 2

Enter your email address and corresponding password.

Forgot your email password? You can reset it using the steps in the article 'I want to change the password of my email address'.

    Step 3

    Choose 'IMAP account'.

    IMAP or POP3?

In this example, we’re using IMAP to set up the email address. With IMAP, a copy of the email is downloaded from the mail server. The original email stays on the server, allowing you to access it from multiple devices.

The alternative is the somewhat outdated POP3 protocol. This removes emails from the server as they are downloaded. Some programs allow you to leave a copy on the server, but POP3 generally forces you to use one email client.

See the article 'What is the difference between POP3 and IMAP?' for more info.

Prefer to use POP3? Then use the POP3 settings described in the article 'The email settings at TransIP'.

    Delete

    Step 4

    Enter your email settings.

    • Email address: Enter your email address here.
    • Username: Enter your email address here.
    • Password: Enter your email password.

Then enter the incoming server settings.

    • IMAP server: Enter imap.transip.email.
    • Security type: Choose SSL.
    • Port: Enter 993.

Lastly, enter the outgoing server settings.

    • SMTP server: Enter smtp.transip.email.
    • Security type: Choose SSL.
    • Port: Enter 465.

Finally, enter your email address and password again, and press 'Log in' to add the email account.

    Delete

Note: The app will now check if the password you entered in Step 2 is correct. If you get an error saying the password is incorrect, check your password and re-enter it in Step 4.

On some Android devices, you'll now have the option to configure additional account settings and specify the account name and sender name.

Your email address has now been successfully set up. You can start using it via the 'Email' app on Android!
