Changing the Volume Type in AMS2 via the OpenStack Dashboard Horizon

Within OpenStack, you have the option to change the type of your volume. You can do this in two ways: via the OpenStack CLI’ (Command-Line Interface) or via the OpenStack Dashboard ‘Horizon. In this guide, we’ll explain how to perform this action through the OpenStack Dashboard ‘Horizon’.

Before you start changing the volume type, please keep the following points in mind:

    • It is not possible to convert a regular volume into an encrypted volume, such as ssd-encrypted, archive-encrypted, or nvme-encrypted in OpenStack.
    • It is possible to change the storage type between volumes such as ssd, nvme, or archive. The same applies to encrypted volumes.
    • We recommend creating a backup of your volume before changing its type, in case you want to revert it to the original type later.

A snapshot creates a point-in-time copy of the volume, which will put the volume in a ‘Locked’ state. While locked, it is not possible to delete the volume or perform a retype operation on it.

    Step 1

Log in to the OpenStack Dashboard ‘Horizon.

    Step 2

In the left-hand menu, select 'Volumes' and then again ‘Volumes’ from the submenu.

    Step 3

For the volume you want to change, click the arrow under ‘Actions’. From the dropdown menu, select 'Change Volume Type'

    Step 4

In the next screen, fill in the following details:

    • Volume Name: Enter a name for your volume
    • Type: The type of volume, such as ssd, ssd-encrypted, archive, or archive-encrypted (see the information window at the top of the screen for more details).
    • Migration Policy: Select the option ‘On Demand’, otherwise the change will not be carried out.

In the next step, the volume type will be changed from 'ssd-encrypted' to 'nvme-encrypted'.

    Step 5

You will now see that the ‘Volume’ is in the process of ‘Retyping’ in the Volumes overview.

    Step 6

Once the ‘Retyping’ process is complete, you will see that the volume has been changed from ‘ssd-encrypted’ to ‘nvme-encrypted’.

You have now successfully changed the type of a volume!
