S3-compatible Object Storage is scalable, affordable online storage that works with many tools and is ideal for creating backups, sharing files and hosting static content.
You place your data in containers within the OpenStack Swift API, also known as ‘buckets’ (folders) within OpenStack. You access the containers/buckets in the same way (API) that Amazon S3 uses. As a result, many existing tools and apps work with it out of the box. This means you can use S3-compatible Object Storage both on-premises, in other clouds or in private cloud environments, often to avoid vendor lock-in and to find more cost-effective or location-specific solutions.
In short, you use S3-compatible Object Storage for:
- Storing backups and archives without a limit on folder size.
- Storing and sharing large files (e.g. photos, videos, downloads).
- Collecting data for reporting or analysis (logs, exports, datasets).
