I want to transfer my email to TransIP

There are countless possible scenarios when it comes to hosting a domain name, a website, and email. For example, your domain name may be with provider 1, your website with provider 2, and you might use email from provider 3. Would you prefer to have everything neatly organized with TransIP? That's possible too!

In this article, we assume you are currently using email addresses with another provider and would like to migrate them to TransIP.

Make a Backup of Your Emails

Before you purchase a package from us, it's useful to first make an inventory of the email addresses currently used on your domain name. Make a backup of each email address you want to transfer to ensure no emails are lost.

You can use Thunderbird, Outlook, or Mail (Mac) for this, or ask your current email provider how best to proceed.

    Choose the Right Package

Now that you know how many email addresses you want to transfer, it's time to choose the appropriate package. If you only want to use email addresses on your domain, we recommend an Email Only package. If you also want web space to host a website, choose a web hosting package.

No matter which package you choose, you can always upgrade your package later or expand it with additional email addresses.

Create Your Email Address(es) in Your Package

    Step 1

Go to the control panel and click 'Email Hosting' in the left menu. Then, under 'Products', click on your domain name.

    Step 2

In the overview, next to 'Email Mailboxes', click '+ Add Mailbox'.

On the right side under Email Package Quotas, you'll see how many mailboxes you can create. If you’ve reached the limit, you can order an extra mailbox using the '+' button.

    Step 3

Enter the email address here and set a password. Click 'Save' once you're done.

Your email address will now be created immediately. Once you see it listed here, it is active!

All information on how to configure your email address can be found in the email setup guides. You can also access your email directly in the browser using the TransIP webmail.

Configure Your Email Address(es) and Import Your Backup(s)

Before changing your DNS settings, we recommend configuring your email addresses first, and then importing your backups. It’s best to use the same software for importing the backups that was used to create/export them, to avoid file compatibility issues.

Open the article ‘Set up your email address’ to view setup guides for various email programs. The general settings are always the same:

    Incoming Email Settings (IMAP)

    • Server: imap.transip.email
    • Port: 993
    • SSL: enabled
    • Username: your email address
    • Password: the password you set for this email address

    Outgoing Email Settings (SMTP)

    • Server: smtp.transip.email
    • Port: 465
    • SSL: enabled
    • Username: your email address
    • Password: the password you set for this email address

For importing your backups, we have guides for Outlook, Mail (Mac), and Thunderbird.

    Check Your DNS Settings

Now that your TransIP mailbox(es) are fully set up for use, it's time to update the DNS settings so you can actually receive emails.

First, check whether the TransIP settings are enabled or disabled. If you have the TransIP settings enabled in your DNS, all settings will be configured automatically to use our services, and no further action is needed.

    transip settings enabled

Are the TransIP settings disabled because you use other DNS settings, for example? Then you’ll need to manually add the correct DNS records through the control panel. You'll find the correct records below or in the email titled ‘DNS settings for yourdomainname.nl’ that you received after ordering your package.

The article ‘Entering DNS records and nameservers via the control panel’ provides more information about adding DNS records.

    MX Record

The MX record tells your domain which mail server to contact to receive email. With the record below, incoming email is delivered to your TransIP mailbox via our server.

    • Name: @
    • Type: MX
    • Value: 10 mx.transip.email.

    SPF Record

This type of record specifies which IP addresses and hostnames are authorized to send email from your domain name. It helps prevent emails you send from being marked as spam.

    • Name: @
    • Type: TXT
    • Value: v=spf1 include:_spf.transip.email ~all

    DKIM Records

These CNAME records enable your domain to use DKIM. DKIM is used to verify the authenticity of email messages. Emails you send are signed with a so-called 'private key'.

The receiving party can validate the email using the 'public key' found in your DNS records. This ensures the message wasn’t altered during transmission and confirms that it was indeed sent by you.

    • Name: transip-A._domainkey
    • Type: CNAME
    • Value: _dkim-A.transip.email.

    • Name: transip-B._domainkey
    • Type: CNAME
    • Value: _dkim-B.transip.email.

    • Name: transip-C._domainkey
    • Type: CNAME
    • Value: _dkim-C.transip.email.

    DMARC Record

This record indicates that your emails are protected by SPF or DKIM, for example. It also instructs an email server on what to do if neither of those checks pass.

This type of record is an additional security measure, but not required.

    • Name: _dmarc
    • Type: TXT
    • Value: v=DMARC1; p=none;

    Autoconfig/Autodiscover Records

These two records allow you to use automatic configuration when setting up your email account in Outlook or Thunderbird.

    • Name: autoconfig
    • Type: CNAME
    • Value: autoconfig.transip.email.

    • Name: autodiscover
    • Type: CNAME
    • Value: autodiscover.transip.email.
