The registrant details of your .nl domain name show who the legal owner of the domain name is. This is important, for example, if a domain name is in quarantine and needs to be reactivated or if an escalation procedure is necessary because the current provider of your domain name does not give you the transfer code.
The registrant details, sometimes also called holder information, are part of the WHOIS information. You can look up the WHOIS information at the registry SIDN at https://www.sidn.nl/en. However, not all WHOIS information, such as the registrant details, is public. If you need the registrant details, you can request these from SIDN.
Below, we explain what the WHOIS information is, which registrant details are publically shown for .nl domains and how you can request the non-public registrant details of your own .nl domain name.
The WHOIS information
The WHOIS information of a .nl domain name provides information about the status of the domain name. For example, a domain name can be available or registered, active or inactive. Behind 'Registrar' it also shows the provider the domain name is currently registered with.
In addition to the availability of a .nl domain name, you will also find the following information:
- The e-mail addresses of the administrative and technical contact
- The status of DNSSEC (whether it's active or not)
- Which name servers are set for the domain name
- When the domain name was registered
- When the WHOIS information of the domain name was last modified
- If the registrant is a company you will also see the name of the registrant. Due to privacy laws SIDN has chosen not to publically show the registrant name if the registrant is a person.
For more information about WHOIS-information with other extensions than .nl or the WHOIS in general, you can look at: What is WHOIS?
The registrant details
Here you can see which registrant details are shown in the public WHOIS information:
- The registrant is a person: The registrant details are completely redacted. Only the e-mail addresses of the administrative and technical contacts are visible.
- The registrant is a company: The registrant details only shows the name of the registrant, but no address or contact information. In addition the e-mail addresses of the administrative and technical contacts are visible.
Requesting non-public registrant details
Requesting the non-public registrant details via the procedure mentioned below can only be done for .nl domains for which you are the registrant. If you are not the registrant of the .nl domain name, you cannot request the registrant details via these steps.
If you have a legitimate interest in viewing the registrant details of someone else's active .nl domain, you can contact the registry SIDN. You can find more information about their procedure on the page SIDN and Privacy on their website.
For domains in quarantaine, you can request the non-public registrant details from SIDN by sending an email to support@sidn.nl with the request. Make sure to add the email address and the postal code of the registrant as verification.
After verifying, SIDN will respond with the WHOIS information. It is important to send a screenshot of this to our support department when you contact them for the reactivation of a .NL domain that was not previously registered with TransIP
If you want to view the non-public registrant details of your own .nl domain name, there are 2 possible situations:
Your .nl domain name is registered with TransIP
Your .nl domain name is not registered with TransIP
The registry SIDN has a special procedure with which you can request the non-public registrant details of your .nl domain name. The steps for this procedure are as follows:
Step 1
Go to the following page of SIDN: SIDN - Requesting registrant details
Step 2
Fill in the fields on that page:
- At '.nl-domain name' you fill in the .nl domain name that you wish to request the registrant details for.
- At 'E-mail adress' you enter the current e-mail address of the registrant.
- Bij 'Postcode' you enter the current postal code of the registrant.
Then click on 'Submit'
Step 3
If the information you entered matches the correct information of the registrant, known to SIDN, you will receive an email. This email contains two links:
- It has one link that is meant for yourself so you can view the registrant details
- It has a second link that you can give to the company that you wish to share the registrant details with.
Both links point to an overview of the registrant details at SIDN that shows all the public and non-public information.
Important:
- These links can only be used once. They are also only valid for one week. If you have clicked the link already or if it is older than one week then you will need to submit a new request for the non-public registrant details.
- It is possible that the email sent by SIDN ends up in your spamfolder. Therefore, also make sure to check your spam folder.
- If you do not have access to the e-mail address of the registrant (anymore) or do not know the postal code of the registrant (anymore) you have two options:
- You can contact the provider the domain name is registered with. You can find this provider in the public WHOIS information of SIDN at https://www.sidn.nl/en.
- You can contact SIDN. For this you can check the page SIDN and Privacy on their website.
