I see an error message when registering a .es domain name

The Spanish registry, Dominios.es, asks additional information when you try to register a .es domain name. This additional information has to be filled in correctly in order to succesfully register the domain name. You can find more information about the additional information they require in the following article: Which additional information is necessary for a .es domain name?

Apart from the additional information the Spanish registry asks, they also have strict requirements. We will explain the requirements below as well as the error message(s) you see if you do not meet the requirements and how you can solve these.

Requirements of the Spanish registry

The strict requirements of the Spanish registry when registering a .es domain name include:

  • The registrant of a domain name may be a private individual (natural person) or a company.
  • The administrative contact of a domain name must be a private individual (natural person), and cannot be a company.
  • The technical contact of a domain name must be a private individual (natural person), and cannot be a company.

If you entered a company as an administrative and/or technical contact, you will receive one or more of the following error messages when you try to register a .es domain name:

Invalid attribute value syntax; Could not get registry contact for admincontact
(P-XXX0000: 541 Invalid attribute value; legal form for organization not allowed)

Could not get registry contact for techcontact
(P-XXX0000: 541 Invalid attribute value; legal form for organization not allowed)

Could not get registry contact for billingcontact
(P-XXX0000: 541 Invalid attribute value; legal form for organization not allowed)

Solution for the error message(s)

The error message(s) above can be solved by changing the Whois information that you are using for the registration of the .es domain name so it complies with the requirements. You do this as follows:

  • Go to 'Domain & Hosting'.
  • Click on your domain name (without ticking the box).
  • On the right side click on 'Retry with different contact information'.
  • Scroll down to 'Administrative details' and change this from 'Company' to 'Personal'. Make sure to add the contact information of a private individual (natural person) instead of a company.
  • Scroll down to 'Technical details' and change this from 'Company' to 'Personal'. Make sure to add the contact information of a private individual (natural person) instead of a company.
  • At the bottom of the page check whether the 'Additional information for .es domains' is filled in correctly. This has to match with the information you have entered above for the registrant, administrative and technical details.
  • Click on 'Save'

The registration will then be restarted with the new information so you will not receive the same error message again.
