Restoring a backup of a VPS back on another VPS

It may happen that you want to restore a backup of your VPS to another VPS or retrieve files from a backup of your VPS without having to restore that backup to the VPS itself.

Restoring a backup directly to another VPS or extracting individual files from a backup is not technically possible. The latter is because backups are a one-on-one copy of the image of your VPS. For privacy and security reasons, we do not have access to the individual files in that image.

In both scenarios, you can choose to convert the backup into a snapshot and restore it to a different VPS. You do this by going through two processes:

  • Convert the specific backup into a snapshot, see this tutorial.

  • Then, restore the snapshot to a VPS of the same size, see this manual.
