What is a .htaccess file?

A .htaccess file (with a period!) is a file type without a name. This is used for websites that run on an Apache server. It allows you to perform certain things and change some (server) settings.

With a .htaccess file for example, you can automatically forward visitors per folder or a secure environment on the basis of an IP address block.
